What makes for good type, layout and design? How can you art direct a designer when it comes to typography. Are there any examples or tutorials on critiquing typography for something with a lot of type?

With the launch of a new newspaper magazine focused on the business of design, Chris sits down with Art Center graduate Minhye to go over some layouts.

  • All the ones he hates, I really like a lot. Hmmm. Difference in opinion. Not everyone is gonna like the same thing.

  • I mean cmon dude even 17:21.. Don't let this hurt your ego but her's looks way better. The eye flows from the TH down to the bottom and over to the right where they read the details, then to the background image. She also created a nice looking effect with the two T's and the I overlapping the boxes and dividing the page with 2/3 or the golden ratio. And leaving space on the right like you suggested can look nice but there's nothing wrong with how she did it. Also with yours people will tend to read IRTHST instead. Its just not worth annoying her and depressing her with nit picky stuff like that since that example is mostly a matter of taste. Just saying this to help you see from an outside perspective and improve the happiness and talent of your employees.

  • I want to watch this type of instruction/critique video all day long. Bravo!

  • Thank you so much for sharing this video – I am an undergraduate BFA Graphic Design student graduating next semester, and in my time at my university, haven't been taught very much about typography or layout design at all. This was so helpful! The idea of working at an ad agency feels very intimidating, but seeing this video giving an example of the interaction between an art director and designer really helps to put me at ease a bit. I've heard horror stories from several people (including instructors) talking about how ad agencies are really tough and that designers are worked to death. Seeing this video has helped me to relax a bit and feel like a job at an ad agency may not be so bad. Thank you again so much!
