What is Web Design?
Web design is used as a general term to describe any of the various tasks involved in creating a web page. More specifically, it refers to jobs focused on building the front-end of a web page. The web consists of myriad pages, presenting information using different technologies and linked together with hyperlinks. There are two basic aspects to any web page found on the Internet. The first is a presentation that the user interacts with, usually visually, while the second is a back-end that includes information for non-human browsers.
HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. It is a type of computer language that is primarily used for files that are posted on the internet and viewed by web browsers. HTML files can also be sent via email.Although it may seem complex to the uninitiated, HTML is relatively simple. All text, graphics, and design elements of a web page are “tagged” with codes that instruct the web browser how to display the files. Such files are easy to recognize because they contain the file extension such as ‘html’ or ‘htm.’In addition to the page content itself, HTML files provide layout and formatting information. HTML is not case sensitive and can be easily updated after the file is created. For the novice web designer, there are many different software utilities and programs available to assist in generating HTML pages. To format a simple text file into HTML, the user creates tags that start and finish with angle brackets. To end the formatting or change to another format, the HTML developer types the first angle bracket, a backslash, then repeats the command and closes the bracket. For example, <H1>Heading</H1> is the code used to create the heading. There are different codes for all sorts of other formatting including italics, tables, paragraphs, etc. The “A” tag is used to designate words that are to be displayed as hyperlinks to other pages. It is important to note that, although all web browsers use HTML, each may interpret and display the code a little differently.Since the development of HTML in the early 1990s by Tim Berners-Lee, there have been a number of changes and versions. These versions have been maintained by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) since 1996. In January 2008, the First Public Working Draft of HTML 5 was published by the working group that is developing this specification. Still under development, this revision is expected to dramatically change application development for the web.
CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)
Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a style sheet language used to describe the presentation semantics (the look and formatting) of a document written in a markup language. Its most common application is to style web pages written in HTML and XHTML, but the language can also be applied to any kind of XML document, including SVG and XUL.CSS is designed primarily to enable the separation of document content (written in HTML or a similar markup language) from document presentation, including elements such as the layout, colors, and fonts. This separation can improve content accessibility, provide more flexibility and control in the specification of presentation characteristics, enable multiple pages to share formatting, and reduce complexity and repetition in the structural content (such as by allowing for table less web design). CSS can also allow the same markup page to be presented in different styles for different rendering methods, such as on-screen, in print, by voice (when read out by a speech-based browser or screen reader) and on Braille-based, tactile devices. While the author of a document typically links that document to a CSS style sheet, readers can use a different style sheet, perhaps one on their own computer, to override the one the author has specified.CSS specifies a priority scheme to determine which style rules apply if more than one rule matches against a particular element. In this so-called cascade, priorities or weights are calculated and assigned to rules, so that the results are predictable.
The CSS specifications are maintained by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Internet media type (MIME type) text/css is registered for use with CSS by RFC 2318 (March 1998).
Website Application Development
There are many different areas of Website Development. One of which is application development which consists of a wide range of software and web applications that enable businesses and individuals to solve their business requirements online. There are many tools to choose from for development from PHP, .NET to Flash and a plethura of new tools out there to choose from.
More and more Websites are being built with the use of databases. Joomla, Drupal and Modx are just a couple of the many varieties out there to choose from for web development. The benefit to the client is that it gives them the ability to update their own site without the need of the designer. Most times, I find that the client will still not update their own Database driven site which affords the designer a nice residual income.Database applications can also include other systems from forms to complex applications such as reservation systems or extremely complex systems that communicate via the web from one system to another. These types of jobs can command the designer/developer a nice income.
However, this is only the tip of the iceberg. Cyberspace extends far beyond what you or anyone else could ever visit in a lifetime. There are billions of Web pages out there, and this number goes up drastically every day. The scary thing is, each one of them was designed by someone.
