The Designer’s Web Handbook: What You Need to Know to Create for the Web

Make the Web Work for You

You know how to design. But you can increase your value as a designer in the marketplace by learning how to make that design function on the web. From informational sites to e-commerce portals to blogs to mobile apps, The Designer’s Web Handbook helps any designer understand the full life cycle of a digital product: idea, design, production and maintenance.

The best web designers create not only beautiful sites but also sites that function well–for both client and end user. Patrick McNeil, creator of the popular web design blog designmeltdown.com and author of the bestselling Web Designer’s Idea Book, volumes 1 and 2, teaches you how to work with developers to build sites that balance aesthetics and usability, and to do it on time and on budget.

  • omg, These are not tutorials they are an informational resource.
and in my opinion are way more useful than all the copy and paste tutorials out there (copy and paste is what i call all the tutorials where you are shown the code and then given a link to download it).
Jose and Aure and the guests discuss the principals and objectives required to do well within the web design industry (although most videos could be used across multiple industries).
so FOR FUTURE REFERENCE learn something new.

  • A possible solution is for us to provide the videos in 3 segments, and let you decide which you want to watch first. I will GUESS THAT YOU WILL LIKE TO GET RIGHT TO THE TUTORIAL PART AND SKIP THE REST OF THE CR@P BECAUSE YOU ARE TRYING TO JUST DESIGN A DAMN SIGHT ANYWAY. I AM WITH YOU! THESE JACKASSES TALK FOR TOO LONG. I GOTTA GET MY SH$T DONE!

  • Thank you for your feedback. If I hear you correctly you are saying that the tutorial starts at 18 minutes. But that the intro and basics you are not interested in. Maybe If I have the tutorial first, then examples, then recap at the end? The challenge is that for those who want an “introduction” to what we are talking about the “basics” helps. If you are just looking for a TUTZ video this might not be right.

  • FOR FUTURE REFERENCE: IT FINALLY STARTS AT 18:35

  • I JUST SIMPLY DON’T UNDERSTAND IF SO MANY PEOPLE ARE VOTING FOR YOU GUYS TO CUT THE CR@P FOR AT LEAST 15MIN (JESUS) WHY CAN’T U JUST DO IT?? I TRIED MANY TIMES TO WATCH UR TUT BUT LOST MY PATIENCE..

  • The sponsors being in the middle is part of the business model. If we put them at the end you would likely just watch the content and skip the sponsors.

Some people like the banter, and watch the show as a way to “entertain and educate”. For those who are in a hurry and are just looking for tutorials, this is probably not the show for you.

  • James you can find other tutorials for the grid on YouTube.
The show is on a network that requires staff to bring it to you. So therefore it has sponsors. We need to include those messages during the show.
If you are in a hurry to “make a grid-based website” you can use Lynda or Treehouse. That is why I mention them at the beginning. Thanks.

  • other than that, you guys are doing a great job. and it’s been quite educational.

  • I have to agree. it’s funny because it feels like one of those 10 min flash page without a skip button, back in the day. For a web design channel you’d should be familiar with online user behaviour.
Even while doing the shout outs you guys babble unnecessarily. Would be great to put these sponsors at the end of the video.

  • Can you please shut up and get to the god-damn point! All I want to know is how to make a grid-based website and half the video is dedicated to talking about jobs and lynda.com all a bucket-load of other irrelevant things. PLEASE GET TO THE POINT!

  • I am sorry you feel that way. What would you like to see in the first 10 minutes?

  • I just watched first 10 mins. You guys said nothing worth to see or watch, just a bunch of commercials.

  • Awesome guys! Thanks a lot 😀

  • Thanks for the info! Keep these going…

  • I’m still learning CSS so I guess I can’t start using grids yet. For now I’m using tables for layout, which I know is wrong.

  • i like this

  • Would be great if you could expand on this to encompass adaptive and responsive grid systems also.

  • Glad you like. More to come.

  • your very welcome. Let us know what topics you would like us to cover.

  • Me to, love the show,

  • I am always super excited, and never disappointed by this show. Thanks for being there for the web geeks^^
