The Designer’s Web Handbook: What You Need to Know to Create for the Web

Make the Web Work for You

You know how to design. But you can increase your value as a designer in the marketplace by learning how to make that design function on the web. From informational sites to e-commerce portals to blogs to mobile apps, The Designer’s Web Handbook helps any designer understand the full life cycle of a digital product: idea, design, production and maintenance.

The best web designers create not only beautiful sites but also sites that function well–for both client and end user. Patrick McNeil, creator of the popular web design blog designmeltdown.com and author of the bestselling Web Designer’s Idea Book, volumes 1 and 2, teaches you how to work with developers to build sites that balance aesthetics and usability, and to do it on time and on budget.

  • “Man shall not live by data alone, but by empathy, vision and channeling users”

  • It really depends on the company/client and also on whether you have existing data. Either qualitative or quantitative. My experience is that even with data and assumptions the best way to validate is to do small iterative releases. This works with start ups as most larger corporate clients don’t do much “beta” releasing. Well Google does.

  • I’m wondering how good it is to work with so many assumptions. These characters are based on the opinions of the people in the room. What was the quote? “You are not the user”.
The last time we developed these kinds of personas we had to invest 2 months of research. Every persona attribute that we defined had to be evidenced in the data.

  • @ThisWeekIn Wow its a little scary how much the second user profile sounds like me.

  • @FashionFilmChannel Craig, What specific Adobe products are you referring to?
I agree that TWi Would be great for Adobe. Lots of content that the creative community needs! Badly. There are amazing opportunities for creatives in the startup / digital / emarketing space. But everyone seems to just focus on the what not the why. If that makese sense.

  • @FashionFilmChannel Dang – Both very very very good ideas!
I like the interactive startup / ebusiness / emarketing Lynda.com
    Thanks for watching!
