CONTEXT
Decadal 2014–2024 framing

The 509 region under sustained hydroclimatic stress

Over the 2014–2024 window, the troposphere over Eastern Washington exhibited prolonged droughts, acute snowpack deficits, displaced Arctic incursions, and record surface temperatures. The 2021 heat dome, 2019 snow record, and 2023–24 drought cycle are the largest documented extremes. The key finding: solar wind does not drive 509 weather.

Climate · Eastern WA

Jun 2021 · heat dome
Hanford: 120°F state record

Omega-block ridge over Washington drove persistent subsidence and adiabatic heating. NOAA State Climate Extremes Committee validated. Spokane reached 109°F; Tri-Cities sustained multiple days above 110°F. Snowpack fell below 30% of normal by April 1 in 2015 and again in 2023-24.

Feb 2019 · Arctic intrusion
Spokane: 30.1" snowiest Feb

Mid-tropospheric trough routed Arctic air into the Columbia Basin. Rossby wave breaking over the eastern Pacific — not a solar trigger.

2023–24 · drought
Snowpack: 35–55% of median

Strong El Niño + anthropogenically forced baseline warming. Crop curtailment declarations across the Yakima Basin.

Solar · Heliosphere

May 10–13, 2024 · G5 superstorm
Solar wind: >1,000 km/s

NOAA AR 13664: 18 X-class flares. IMF Bz sustained southward > 24h. Magnetopause compressed to 5.04 RE. Kp = 9; Dst < −400 nT. Auroras at 509-region latitude.

Cycle 24 → 25 transition
Cycle 25 peak: 216 (Aug 2024)

Cycle 24 was weak (peak sunspot 146 in early 2014). Cycle 25 rose faster than forecast. The decadal analysis shows space weather does not measurably couple to 509 tropospheric extremes.

2017–2019 · deep minimum
Wind: <350 km/s

Spotless days dominated. Heliospheric current sheet flattened. Quiet IMF. Coincided with the Feb 2019 snow record — and the snow record was driven by Arctic polar vortex displacement, not solar minimum.

Seismic · 509 backarc

Dec 14, 1872 · Entiat/Chelan
Largest crustal quake: M ~6.5–7

Shallow focal depth along Spencer Canyon fault. Ongoing microseismicity is a 150-year aftershock sequence, consistent with theoretical decay in crystalline host rock.

Yakima Fold & Thrust Belt
Swarm depth: <4 km in CRB

~50% of cataloged central-basin events are shallow swarms in the Miocene Columbia River Basalt Group. Driven by inter-bed shear + pore-fluid pressure in basalt aquifers. Wooded Island swarm (2009–11): thousands of microevents.

2014–2024 window
Activity: normal envelope

No large-magnitude crustal ruptures in the 509 region. Activity dominated by Entiat aftershocks and Hanford-Richland-Yakima micro-swarms.

Key finding

Tropospheric extremes in the 509 area code operate independently of solar-terrestrial pathways. The June 2021 heat dome occurred during a quiet solar phase; the February 2019 snow record coincided with the decadal solar minimum; the May 2024 G5 superstorm produced no measurable change in barometric pressure, surface wind, or temperature across Eastern Washington. The reason is thermodynamic: geomagnetic storms deposit ~1011–1012 W in the upper thermosphere, while the troposphere is energized by solar electromagnetic radiation delivering ~1016–1017 W — a 10,000–100,000× energy disparity.

Yakima Fold & Thrust Belt — Columbia River Basalt Group

The YFTB sits in the backarc province of the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The upper crust is the Miocene CRB, up to 4 km thick. Strain rates of ~10⁻⁸/yr produce east-west anticlinal ridges (Saddle Mountains, Manastash Ridge, Rattlesnake Mountain) separated by synclinal basins. Between one-third and one-half of cataloged central-basin events are shallow swarms at depths < 4 km, driven by stress release along inter-bed contacts and pore-fluid pressure variations in basalt aquifers. Notable: 2009–2011 Wooded Island swarm (Richland/Hanford) — thousands of microearthquakes.

Entiat corridor — Spencer Canyon fault

The most powerful historical crustal event recorded in Washington State occurred December 14, 1872, along the western margin of the Columbia Plateau. Paleoseismic excavations along the Spencer Canyon fault and seismic intensity back-calculations confirm a moment magnitude in the M6.5–7 range. The ongoing cluster of shallow microearthquakes represents a prolonged aftershock sequence continuing more than 150 years later, matching theoretical Omori-law decay for crystalline host rock. The 509 region continues to record persistent background seismicity here.

Spokane / Latah Fault Zone

Eastern 509 — including the Spokane Fault and Latah Fault Zone — produces shallow high-stress crustal seismicity (strike-slip / thrust). The 2001 Spokane urban swarm is the most documented historical event. Compared to basalt-basin swarms, eastern events are less frequent but tend to occur in more competent bedrock with sharper felt reports. In the 2014–2024 window: normal envelope, low-level background microseismicity.

Why one symbol?
Twelve Data's free tier (8 calls/minute, 800/day) supports forex spot pairs and a limited equities set, but its commodities / futures endpoints require the Grow or Venture paid plan. This page therefore shows live gold spot vs USD (XAU/USD) as the only free-tier commodity proxy available — not the full 18-symbol commodities dashboard that was originally scoped. The proxy at /api/commodities.php will surface additional symbols automatically if a paid Twelve Data plan is added later — no JS changes required.

Open & free
Methodology and limits. Live weather is fetched in your browser from Open-Meteo (public API, no key, no signup). Temperatures are displayed in Fahrenheit and wind speeds in miles per hour. Live gold spot vs USD is fetched from Twelve Data's `/quote` endpoint through a server-side PHP proxy at `/api/commodities.php` — the API key never reaches the browser, only normalized JSON does. Twelve Data's free tier covers forex spot pairs but not futures contracts, so the original 18-commodity dashboard has been scoped down to a single-symbol gold spot widget here. The proxy will surface additional symbols if a paid plan is added later without JS changes. Live stocks are fetched from Finnhub's `/quote` endpoint through a server-side PHP proxy at `/api/quotes.php` — the API key never reaches the browser, only normalized JSON does. Live cryptocurrency prices are fetched from CoinGecko's public `/coins/markets` endpoint (no key required, CORS-enabled) for the top 10 by market cap. Live FX rates are fetched from Frankfurter's public ECB reference endpoint (no key required, CORS-enabled) for major currencies vs USD. Live air-quality readings (US AQI, PM2.5, PM10, ozone, UV index) are fetched from Open-Meteo's Air Quality API (no key required, CORS-enabled) for the same eight anchor cities. Live sunrise/sunset times for the daylight-curve visualization are fetched from the Open-Meteo Forecast API daily endpoint (no key required, CORS-enabled). Live moon-phase data (phase fraction 0–1, moonrise, moonset) for the 8-day cycle panel is fetched from the Open-Meteo Forecast API daily endpoint; illumination percentage is computed locally with `(1 − cos(2π · frac)) / 2`, the standard astronomical approximation. The heat-index panel uses the Rothfusz/Steadman regression (NOAA) for air temperatures ≥ 80°F with humidity, the NWS wind-chill formula for temperatures ≤ 50°F with wind ≥ 3 mph, and falls back to raw air temperature otherwise — no extra API calls; derived entirely from the live data already on screen. CoinGecko prices refresh every ~60 seconds; Frankfurter ECB rates are end-of-day; Finnhub free-tier quotes are 15+ minutes delayed; Twelve Data free-tier forex quotes are 15-30 minutes delayed; Open-Meteo air-quality readings update hourly. The data is provided for situational awareness, not for trading, health, or outdoor-exposure decisions. The decadal context is sourced from the 2014–2024 study and presented as historical background — not a forecast. Live seismic feeds from PNSN/USGS and space-weather feeds from NOAA SWPC are referenced but not embedded, to avoid silent rate-limit failures on third-party endpoints. No specific dollar, casualty, or infrastructure figures are asserted. The decadal analysis's central finding — solar wind does not drive 509 weather — is preserved verbatim in the key-finding section. This page is descriptive, not financial, medical, or safety advice.
